天明3年7月、群馬県を代表する山「浅間山」が歴史的な大噴火をしました。その際に噴出した大量の火砕流や溶岩流が、まるで浅間山に住んでいる鬼が押し出したもののように見られたことから、その名前が付いたとされています。

上毛三山の一つ「榛名山」周辺には、その火山活動で生まれた「榛名湖」が広がります。四季折々の美しい景観と自然を満喫できるスポットとして、群馬県内の観光地としても人気です。秋には紅葉で山一帯が美しく彩られ、湖面に鮮やかに映し出されます。また、冬になると例年イルミネーションを開催しています。湖周辺が約50万もの電球で照らされ、幻想的な世界が広がります。
